Lean and Green Award DB Schenker
Award for DB Schenker in national Sustainable Logistics innovation programme • air and road transportation greatest potential for reducing emissions
(Tilburg, 11th September 2009) At the national Connekt congress ‘Drive safely, transport green’ DB Schenker received a ‘Lean & Green Award’ handed over by Dr. Eric Janse de Jonge, member of the Dutch Senate. As part of the Sustainable Logistics innovation programme 9th September was declared ‘Day of Sustainability’. Together with nine renowned companies Schenker B.V. received the award based on defined intentions regarding CO2 reduction.
Gerd Kunath, CEO Schenker B.V.: "Not only do we support DB’s target of reducing CO2 emissions by 20 percent by 2020, as incorporated into the DB Eco Program, DB Schenker has identified air and road transportation in particular as business areas with the greatest potential for reducing emissions. Targets of 25 percent specific CO2 emission reduction for air transportation and 26 percent for road transportation, with the year 2006 as baseline, have been set."
"DB Schenker combines the strengths of each mode of transportation. By offering an intelligent combination we provide a more cost-effective and more environmentally friendly overall product to our customers", says Kunath. "For instance DB SCHENKERskybridge, a combination of air and ocean freight. Compared to pure air freight, it reduces CO2 emissions by 50 percent. And transport times are cut by 30 to 50 percent compared to straight ocean freight. Within European Land transport a mix of many specific environmentally friendly measures like eco-efficient driver training, telematic fleetboard management and modernizing our truck fleet help to reduce the pollution load from road haulage. DB SCHENKERcargonet, an internal pan-European freight exchange connects over 180 locations resulting in optimization of capacity and consignments."
The DB Group has defined targets to reduce the average CO2 emissions step by step by 2020. Within the DB Schenker Group four lighthouse projects have been defined. With ‘Green Logistics Networks’, ‘Green Road’, ‘Green Product Rail’ and ‘Green Terminals’ DB Schenker is leading the way in the logistics sector and, at the same time, is making a major contribution to the ‘DB Eco Program’, the global warming management program of the DB Group. In the Netherlands Young DB Schenker, a task force of selected junior employees involved in special projects to develop management and business skills, did have the responsibility to drive the project of CO2 emission leading to the award.
Schenker B.V. in the Netherlands has a network of modern logistics centres and offices in Amsterdam/Schiphol, Beringe (L), Ede, Maastricht, Oldenzaal, Rotterdam, Tilburg and Venlo.
